Case 4: The Fake Police Threat Scam
A 39-year-old man selling his laptop online was contacted by a buyer who later turned into a scammer threatening legal action.
Step 1: Fake Dispute Claim
The buyer claimed that he had made a payment but never received the product. He then threatened to report the seller to the police for fraud.
Step 2: Extorting Money
Under pressure, the seller transferred ₹2.5 lakh to the scammer to settle the false dispute.
Step 3: Realization and Action
After verifying that no payment was ever made, the seller approached the cybercrime division.
