1. Bengaluru Techie Duped Through Gifted Smartphone (2024)

Steps of the Fraud:
- Deceptive Offer:
- A 60-year-old techie in Bengaluru received a call from an individual posing as a bank representative, informing him that he had earned substantial reward points and was eligible for a complimentary smartphone.
- Delivery of Compromised Device:
- The victim received a courier with the bank’s branding containing the promised smartphone.
- Installation and Use:
- Trusting the source, the victim inserted his SIM card into the new device and began using it.
- Unauthorized Access and Fund Transfer:
- Unbeknownst to him, the smartphone was embedded with a cloning app and other malicious software, allowing scammers to gain complete control over the device. They changed the mobile number linked to his bank account and siphoned off ₹2.8 crore from his fixed deposits.
