- Scammers provide a QR code under the pretense of sending money.
- Victims scan the code, unknowingly authorizing a payment instead.
- The money is transferred to the fraudster’s account without their knowledge.
4. QR Code Scam (2024)
Steps of the Fraud:
- Fake Product Listings:
- Scammers post attractive deals on online marketplaces.
- Payment via QR Code:
- Upon showing interest, the victim is asked to scan a QR code to make the payment.
- Authorization of Payment:
- The QR code, instead of crediting the victim’s account, prompts a payment, leading to money being debited.
- Loss of Funds:
- Victim loses money and receives no product in return.
