3. Ivory Coast Sextortion Case (2025)

A cybercriminal from Ivory Coast, Aly Cherif, led a sextortion scheme that resulted in the suicide of a North Dakota teenager. His group exploited social media to blackmail victims.
Steps:
- Fake Identity Creation – Cherif and his associates posed as an attractive young woman on Instagram and Snapchat, targeting teenage boys looking for online friendships or relationships.
- Teen Victim Targeting – The group specifically looked for teen boys with open social media accounts, engaging them in personal conversations to build trust.
- Threats & Demands – Once a victim sent explicit images, they immediately demanded money, threatening to send the images to family, friends, and schoolmates. The threats created severe psychological pressure.
- Psychological Pressure – The North Dakota teenager felt trapped, unable to escape the threats, and suffered extreme distress, believing his life was over.
- Suicide & Arrest – The victim ultimately took his own life. Law enforcement launched an international investigation, leading to Cherif’s indictment and legal proceedings in the U.S.
