Proofs
Victims of email fraud should gather the following evidence to aid in the investigation and report the scam:
- Email Headers: Collect the full email headers, as they contain information about the sender, including the true origin of the email (this can help trace the fraudster’s location).
- Screenshots or Copies of the Email: Save copies of the fraudulent email, including the subject, body text, and any attachments or links it contains.
- Links and URLs: Record any URLs or links in the email that may lead to fake websites. If clicked, these links may capture login details or other sensitive information.
- Financial Transactions or Wire Transfers: If the scam involves money, collect bank or payment records showing any funds transferred to the fraudster.
- Communications with the Fraudster: Save any communications with the fraudster, including replies to the scam email, phone calls, or messages that may reveal the fraudster’s methods.
